When you chase things they run away

It was Jan 2003. I was doing my final semester. I was getting nervous about job after college. I could speak a little bit of English and did not find any other skill that will get me a job. The first company to come to our college was a Call Center company. Even though I did want to be a calling agent, I attended the interview. During the discussion the interviewer said I was looking desperate. I did not understand what he meant then & was rejected.

Later realized that the I was my problem. I wanted a job badly which was causing trouble. One of my friend came to me and asked "What will happen if you don't get a job while in college? You will definitely get one later. But if you feel this way, you might never get one!" It was then I decided to do my part and not think about the outcome.

The moment you get too attached to things, people, money, your job you invariably screw it up! The challenge of life is to appreciate everything and attach yourself to nothing. When you chase things too hard they run away. Did you ever need to sell something, desperately? A car, a house, who wanted it? Nobody! So you dropped the price. Who cared? Nobody! The principle? When you are desperate, nothing happens!

Desperation pulls you into a descending spiral – and the more your worry, the less people you attract! Detachment is major reason rich people get richer. They do not care so much, they are not desperate.

On the mental and physical level, we are dealing with natural laws. Nature does not understand desperation! Nature seeks balance and you cannot be desperate and balanced. Life does not have to be an endless struggle. Let things flow. It is not indifference, it is neither forcing things.

Finally, I had 2 excellent jobs to choose. More importantly I realized, life is like a butterfly which will sit on your shoulders if you don't run for it.

  4. Hi sunder !! Nice to see you in blogger :) Nice one .. desperation should not be there i agree totally but i doubt with respect to detachment !! because in this world attachment only keeps humman as human ..For example :- Terrorist's detatchment (his family) leads to bomb blast (killing 1000s) .. Army men detachment save this country ... So attachment is two edged knife !! so i am bit confused with respect to detachment !!

  6. a very good one da.Was very happy to see a short one... we should try to work without attachment.. the moment u are attached, u have expectations and the moment u have expectations, there comes disappointments... but at the end of the day we are all human, if we could live like that, we would be gyani's. continue writing.

  7. Thank you all for you encouragement.

@Jithu - I see your point. In this blog, detachment refers to not expecting any returns for our actions. Attachment refers to selfish parasitic clinging.

@Viji - Perfect! We can only strive for excellence but never be perfect.

  11. hi sundar
this may be true, but i have a question.
Usually we desire for something, and work towards getting it....is this also considered desperation. because there r chances of failures there also. When we dont have effort and dedication in doing things ( which may lead to desperation some times) then how can we get things done just by leaving it off. because,i have experienced this, and people say you dont have strong desire to get, that's why the things do not happen.Desire...i think it's also an attachment. Then if getting attached to desire is considered desperation, the why should v have strong desire for getting anything.

  12. @prathiba - Its a good question that haunts all of us. I would like to differentiate between path and destination. If we are too focused on destination, then we miss the right path.

Take for example, A.R.Rahman. Before he got Oscars (destination), I have not heard him talking about it. To me he was focused on creating good music (path). Same with other achievers, they are less focused with results but more interested in following what they believe.

Similarly, I know Kamal Hassan has talked about getting oscars for a Tamil film, which would definitely be a proud moment. But I believe he was too focused on it at one point in time. And it never happened.

Bagawat Gita says.. do the right time and don't worry about results. Thats the essence of life!
