What we stand for and why we exist?

One day, I saw a squirrel eating apple. I realized that the apple tree exists for providing fruit and shelter to others. Squirrel exists for dispersing the seeds and thereby creating more trees. And finally the earth exists for providing enough for all.

Then I asked myself "What I stand for and why I exist?". I could not find an answer. I was better a squirrel with a purpose than a human being without any. I could not believe that I had lived half my life without any real purpose. I was just surviving, not living.

Months passed by, I still had no answer. One rainy evening, I saw a small bird hopping. It was not able to fly. In the past I have ignored these situation. I would turn other side because it was not my problem. But this time it was different. I realized that my purpose of life then was to nurse that bird. I took the bird, it was a little one which has been trying to fly high. It was raining and hence the young wet wings was not able to flap.

I dried its wings and held it near a fan. In a few minutes, the little one soared again in the sky. I was very happy and satisfied. I found the purpose in life then. I wrote down,

My purpose in life is to serve.

  1. Amazing... I still donno what i stand for. But i just know i got to be righteous, truthful and honest to myself, else i can't sleep well.In the last one year, i just noticed one thing, if someone comes home i feel guilty if i send them back without giving anything...

May be i dont have so much clarity yet..

  6. Sundar, Good one , but mind always analysing your article in different angle.I dont know why ,May be it depends on people also!! As per your article i understand we need to serve others , if so we will be happy and satisfied and purpose of our life .Since you are sensible you dried young bird in fan and sent out to the sky and the young bird is sensible it flew away.
There are other 2 cases here we should consider ..
First :- If the person is not sensible , he is saving that wet young bird in fan and can send it to fan itself. It means in the name of helping / serving some people i know "Upakaramra perla uputhruvatha pannunga"
Second :- If the bird is not sensible it can go to fan and get hurt. In this case even we help people they will not utilize our help properly.

Have you seen those kinds of people ? What would you say about those cases ? What would you suggest ! Whether to help or not .

@ Viji , I am the person who is frequent visitor to your home for the past one year :) Now i understand why you are serving food , not for me but for you :) just for fun ..

  7. @jithu - I would rather that others thoughfully consider and reject my thoughts than accept them blindfully without questioning.

Just for more clarity, serving is different from helping. We help others in need. Mother Teresa served others. The difference lies in our thoughts. Serving is done by considering others as equals. Help is provided to compensate for someone's inability.

Coming back to your questions. I believe we need to serve others with utmost care. If not then its not service. But even after great care things can go wrong. Accidents happen. We have to accept it.

In the hands of Mother Teresa many would have died. She was responsible for those deaths. Neither would she have thought so. Because we can not serve others with guilt.

  8. CORRECTION - Mother Teresa was NOT responsible for those deaths.

  9. I am not rejecting your thoughts . just questioning from my perspective..I understood your point. Again your topics detachment (yesterday) and now serving good topics are related. people should follow but as viji said ultimately at teh end of the day we are HUMAN BEINGS :) and moreover we are pushed to the environment where 'dog eats dog' is the main principle!!
In olden days people were like 'Yours is yours and mine is also yours, and thinking bad itself sin and doing good is punya '
In middle days "yours is yours and mine is mine ,Doing bad is sin and doing good is punya " and now today people are "mine is mine and yours also mine, doing bad is sin and thinking good itself punya !! " . As Kamalahassan says in dasavathara last scene that "Kadavul illenu sollala , iruntha nanna irukkum (I dont say god is not here , it would be good if he is here) .. Like that your both topics Detachment adn Service , i do not say human beings do not have but it would be good if human beings have !!
